Imperative for US to continue focusing on safety of Pak’s nuke establishments: Curtis

Posted: 10 Apr 2010 08:21 AM PDT

Washington, Apr.10 (ANI): The upcoming nuclear security summit here is of much significance for both Pakistan and the United States, as the Obama Administration, time and again, has pressed Islamabad to ensure the safety of its nuclear establishments amidst heightened threats from the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

According to Lisa Curtis, Senior Research Fellow for South Asia in the Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation, more than the threat posed by the extremists, it's the nefarious links between former Pakistani officials and nuclear scientists with access to nuclear information with Taliban and al-Qaeda terrorists, which threatens the region as well as the whole world.

Curtis highlighted that it is imperative for Washington, which has spent over 100 million dollars over the last eight years under programmes aimed at improving the safety and security of Pakistan's nuclear weapons programs, to continue to focus on the safety of the troubled country's nuclear arsenals.

'U.S. policy should continue to focus on preventing the possible penetration of Pakistan's nuclear establishment by individuals sympathetic to Al-Qaeda goals,' Curtis said.

White House ‘gatecrashers’ Salahi’s say they have stayed ‘low-key’ since event

Posted: 10 Apr 2010 08:17 AM PDT

Washington, Apr 10 (ANI): The gate-crashing Salahis of Virginia, who met U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama during the state dinner in honour of Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in November last year, have claimed that they are committed to keep 'low key' after their infamous stunt.

'We have stayed quiet; we have stayed low key,' Politico quoted Tareq, as saying.

"That’’s what we committed to do, and we”ve honored the commitment we”ve made with ourselves and with our counsel and with others to stay quiet and not discuss things that weren”t really necessary to discuss," he added.

He further said he along with Michaele had to face a great amount of invasion of privacy that 'no human being, no American citizen, should ever go through'.

"We wouldn't want to relive what we had to go through. Because you have to understand … there wasn”t three or four media, there wasn”t 10 media, there were trucks and trucks in front of the winery [we own] trying to find us and catch an interview. There was maybe 150-200 media. That was disturbing," Tareq said.

"It was disturbing that Fox News was coming and actually trespassing on our private land, trying to open doors of our houses, removing signs. … We were concerned that somebody from that kind of news organization was doing that — that bothered us," he added.

Last year, Michaele and Tareq Salahi had met and shook hands with the President and the first lady in the receiving line in the Blue Room, as the Obamas greeted each of their 400 invited guests.

The White House had released a photograph of the couple in the receiving line, being greeted by Obama.

In the photo, a smiling Michaele Salahi, wearing a red and gold sari, was seen clasping Obama's hand with both of hers, as her husband looked on. The Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was standing next to Obama.

Twilight sends ”Wuthering Heights” sales soaring

Posted: 10 Apr 2010 08:13 AM PDT

London, April 10(ANI): Emily Bronte’’s classic gothic novel ”Wuthering Heights” has witnessed its sales quadruple after the release of vampire film Twilight.

The cult teenage film is itself based on a trilogy of books by Stephanie Meyer.

The lead character of Bella, in Twilight series, compares her love for the vampire Edward with Cathy’’s passion for Heathcliff in ”Wuthering Heights.”

Before the first Twilight books came out in 2005, Bronte’’s book sold 8,551 a year in Britain.

However, the publishers Harper Collins reissued it last year, with a cover inspired by the Twilight artwork and the tag-line: “Bella and Edward’’s favourite book”.

According to Nielsen Bookscan, which monitors book sales across the industry, the result sales reaching 2,634 in one week and totaling to 34,023 during the year.

“It’’s fantastic to see teenagers are reading a whole different genre - the classics - as well as fantasy novels because of the popularity of Stephanie Meyer’’s books,” the Telegraph quoted Tesco’’s assistant book buyer Rachel Harcourt as saying.

She added: “The new sleek black gothic-style covers of Wuthering Heights clearly appeal to lovers of vampire romance stories and are helping them to try out a different read. Anything that encourages teenagers to read good books is welcome as there are so many distractions which prevent today’’s youngsters from developing reading as a hobby.”

However, everyone is not happy with Harper Collins” marketing ploy.

A reviewer on Amazon said: “How disgusting that they”ll take a literary classic, and revamp it just so it looks like the “teen sensation” that is Twilight. Drawing this parallel is an absolute atrocity, Emily Bronte would be turning in her grave if she could see this.”

Pakistani Sikh politician facing Islamists threat may get asylum in UK

Posted: 10 Apr 2010 08:12 AM PDT

London, Apr 10 (ANI): A prominent Pakistan politician of Sikh origin has been given a second chance to claim asylum in the United Kingdom, as he fears for his life back home from Islamists.

pakistani-sikh-politician

Gyan Singh, a Sikh and an outspoken opponent of Islamic extremism, fears his life would in danger if he was sent back to Pakistan.

In 2006, while attending the United Nations general assembly in New York, he flew with his wife and children to the UK following reports of a plan to attack the family home in north-west Pakistan, near the Afghan border.

Other relatives also fled and settled in Scotland, but they and Gyan Singh were refused asylum by the Home Office, The Scotsman reports.

Yesterday, the judges in the Court of Session in Edinburgh decided that the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal should rehear the four claims.

The court heard that Gyan Singh was a prominent figure in the political life of Pakistan. He had been elected to the National Assembly in 1999 and was particularly active in the area of human rights, the paper reports.

In his asylum claim, Gyan Singh had stated that his activities on behalf of non-Muslims and his opposition to Islamic extremism made him unpopular.

He was physically attacked in the National Assembly after speaking in support of a military strike on a school where terrorists were trained, the paper reports.

Gyan Singh also claimed to have been kidnapped and tortured, and that an attempt had been made to abduct his children while security guards, who were supposed to be protecting them, had looked on and allowed the gang to escape.

He said his wife had received threatening phone calls that he should not speak out against terrorists and that a cousin had been shot dead.

Paltrow has 2 children with husband Chris Martin. Apple, five, and Moses, four.

After Moses” birth in 2006, Gwyneth could not attach herself to her son.

And the actress kept her fears hidden. But Paltrow’’s fears came forth when husband Chris confronted her with the problem, reports the Daily Express.

“At my lowest, I was a robot. I just didn”t feel anything. I had no maternal feelings for him - it was awful. I had no thoughts of harming him, thank God, but I couldn”t connect, and still, when I look at pictures of him at three months old, I don”t remember that time,” she told Vogue Magazine.

“My problem was that I never acknowledged anything was wrong. I just carried on as normal, and I just felt crazy. It was Chris, actually, who said out loud that something was wrong. And that was such a relief when he did because it was confirmation that it wasn”t just me,” she added.

Sir Cliff Richard chose stardom over girlfriend

Posted: 10 Apr 2010 08:05 AM PDT

London, April 10 (ANI): British singer Sir Cliff Richard is said to have broken his first girlfriend’’s heart by sending her a letter saying that he cannot have a lasting relationship with her because of his career.

sir-cliff-richard

Richard, 69, was just 21 when he wrote the break-off letter to his then girlfriend Delia Wicks, and now the contents have been made public after her death from cancer at 71.

Delia had met Richard when she danced at one of his shows, and they went out for 18 months, with him bringing his mother and sisters on their dates.

He met her family at their home in Leeds and she later admitted that she hoped to be his wife, but her dreams were shattered when the letter, from Australia where he was on tour, arrived in October 1961.

And as if it was not bad enough to be dumped by airmail, Delia also had to go through the indignity of having her name spelt incorrectly - as Dellia.

The letter, which was made public by her brother Graham Wicks, 65, after her death last weekend, read:

“Dear Dellia, I know I haven”t written for a long time but I”ve been so confused in my mind about you and about myself. I”ve just had to make, probably, one of the biggest decisions I”m ever going to make and I”m hoping that it won”t hurt you too much.

“Dellia, I want you to try and understand the position I”m in. Being a singer I”m going to have to give up many things in life. But being a pop singer I have to give up one priceless thing - the right to any lasting relationship with any special girl.

“Dellia, you must find someone who is free to love you as you deserve to be loved, and is able to marry you. I couldn”t give up my career, besides the fact that my mother and sisters, since my father’’s death, rely on me completely. I have showbiz in my blood now and I would be lost without it.

“D, all I can say now is goodbye and don”t think too badly of me. Love, Cliff.”

Delia later became Mrs Pyle, and after one failed marriage she later worked in a shoe shop.

“We have heard of Delia’’s death. Sir Cliff is overseas at present but we have forwarded a message to let him know,” Times Online quoted the Cliff Richard Organisation as saying.

Chinese Government officials would be better educated in the laws and regulations regarding religious affairs and carry out their duties legally, said Hui at a function to mark the fifth anniversary of the Regulations on Religious Affairs.

In addition, religious groups and people should be more aware of abiding by the law in their religious activities, through proper education, Xinhua quoted him, as saying.

Hui said the government would update the regulations and improve their application, though he gave no detailed plans.

With the assistance of religious affairs administrations, religious groups should improve their internal management, including internal rules and frameworks, he said, adding that they should keep better clergy records and standardize religious education.

Rajkot (Gujarat), Apr 10 (ANI): The forest officials here are all set to conduct a comprehensive and methodological lion census at the Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajkot.

A team comprising more than 1600 people, including forest officials, regional officers, zonal officers, enumerators and volunteers, will conduct the census at the national park from April 23 to 27.

Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sandeep Kumar said, the preparations for the census are on for the last nine months and the lions are being closely monitored in their natural habitat.

Kumar said that the forest officials are expecting an increase in the lion population as recorded in the previous census.

During the 2005 census, 359 lions were found in Gir.

“If you see the population of the lions in the last 6-7 census continuously, the trend of the population shows that there is an increase in every census. This time of course, we are expecting an increase in the population,” said Kumar.

“We will know the exact number after finishing the census. But the resident area of the lions has also seen an increase in comparison to last 4-5 years where they were staying,” he added.

Besides the national forest area, the lions can also be located in the reserve forest area, protected forest area outside the Gir sanctuary, other wastelands and the villages in the region.

Kumar further said scientific tools of mapping like the Geographical Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) are being used in this year’’s census keeping into account a large area of their habitat.

“We are using the Geographical Information System (GIS) this time extensively for our preparation purposes. We are also using the Global Positioning System (GPS) to know their exact location, said Kumar.

“On that basis, we can say what is the composition of land and where they are exactly located during the census period. We will plot it on the GIS map,” he added.

The officials also plan to take photographs of all the lions, lionesses and cubs found, so that they can have photographical evidence and records of the species.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is expected to announce the census on May 1, when the state celebrates its foundation day.
